Kathy Wohlfahrt's Christmas Store (Much bigger than it looks from the outside!)
Outside the wall of the city
Took a trip to Rothenburg. It was probably the most beautiful city we have see so far. The town is fully enclosed by an exterior stone wall which is almost entirely intact. A lot of factors went in to the preservation of the city. Won’t bore you with all of the history but here is a brief synopsis.
A combination of the Thirty Years’ War and the Black Plague left the town left the town almost destitute. The town stopped growing and preserved the 17th century culture. Nazi ideologist thought Rothenburg was “the most German of German towns.”
During World War II US Secretary of War ordered the US Army not to use artillery in taking Rothenburg to preserve the historical importance and beauty of Rothenburg.
Ignoring Hitler’s order, to fight to the end, Germany’s Major Thommes surrendered the city to prevent damage from Artillery. A few buildings in the city, mostly houses were destroyed by bombs. But the city remained almost entirely intact.
Rothenburg was also the inspiration for the village in Pinocchio and was the village in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
We went to Rothenburg to see the city but also to visit a Christmas store there. Kathy Wohlfahrt's Christmas store. The store was HUGE! With mostly handmade Christmas ornaments, manger scenes, and so much more. There was a 18 foot revolving Christmas tree and a 13 foot nutcracker greeting us as we walked in. Unfortunately we couldn’t take pictures inside the store but they had a few that were posted on their website.
After we finished at the Christmas store which took over an hour just to walk though. We went to the city wall. From where we were we overlooked the other side of the town which wrapped around a valley.
We were there only a few hours before it started getting dark and started raining. We didn’t get to see a large part of the city but I’m defiantly looking forward to going back and seeing some more when we get a chance.
