The Rabens Head to Berlin

November 27,2010

We decided to take a day trip to Berlin. We wanted to see some of the historical sites. It was a long drive to get there. The kiddos did well in the car as usual but it was still a long trip.

When we got there Ryan surprised me by driving right to Dolores. He had done his research. Dolores is a burrito restaurant (the only one in all of Berlin). We haven't had any luck with finding good Mexican Food here. Dolores makes California style burritos. But while it wasn't true Mexican Food the burritos were still awesome!

It was a good thing that we went to eat first. After we started walking around the city we stumbled in to one of their Christmas markets. Germany is famous for their Christmas Markets. People fly from the States just to come to the Christmas Markets every year. A Christmas Market is a bunch of vendors selling everything from toys, to Christmas decorations but most of all lots and lots of German foods.

After we walked through the first Christmas Market we found we continued walking around the city. As we walked around a corner Ryan grabbed my arm with a big grin on his face. So I looked the general direction that he was looking. All I saw was a KFC sign. Now KFC is alright but nothing to get to excited about plus we had just eaten. After he told me to look again I saw it... DUNKIN DOUGHNUTS!!! Now I could have cared less about the doughnuts but I was able to get a fresh Dunkin's Coffee (my favorite) for the first time in almost five months. They do sell the packaged Dunkin's Coffee at the Commissary but it just isn't the same. It was so yummy!

We walked though another Christmas Market before deciding to go back to the car and drive to the other side of Berlin to try to find some of the historical sites we originally were going to see. Berlin is a big city. A lot of places are pretty run down but other parts are beautiful (just like most big cities).

We never found any of the historical things we were looking for but we stopped at one last Christmas Market and walked around for a bit. It is weird seeing German's out so late. Normally all of the stores are closed by 8pm or so. But the Christmas Markets are a very big deal here and they stay open late.

There is so much more that we wanted to see. Berlin is supposed to have an awesome Zoo and so many different historical things to see. Hopefully, we will be able to make another trip up there... and no not just so I can get some more Dunkin's Coffee ;-)
