Our front door locks automatically when it closes so you can't open it from the outside. You can still open it from the inside and it is the kind that you just have to pull down the lever to open. So we always lock the door so that you have to have the key to open it so that the kiddos can't get out.
That morning a lady from the building behind us was out plowing her snow with her son and their dog. Rusty can see them from the back door and was barking at them as usual.
I went to use the bathroom.
When I came out the front door was wide open. Eli and Rusty were no where in sight. I ran outside screaming Eli's name. But I couldn't hear him and couldn't see them anywhere. We have friends that live right behind us and I thought that Eli might have tried to go over to their house to play. So I ran back there. I saw the ladies son standing there but not her and not her dog.
So I asked him (he is just a little older than Eli) if he had seen Eli. He kind of pointed back to his house. As I came around the storage sheds in front of their building I saw the lady walking out of her house with Eli. She had been trying to get him to put a coat on. Luckily he at least had his shoes on.
I am guessing that Eli opened the door and Rusty took off to get to the other dog and Eli followed him.
I grabbed Eli and threw my sweater on him. Another lady went into her house and grabbed a leash and they helped me catch Rusty.
I kept hugging Eli until finally he grabbed my face and said "No, more hugs mom!"
I have never been so scared. I don't know how many years I aged in those few minutes but I will be happy if I never have to go through that again.
Not sure why or how the door was left unlocked that day but so thankful that I found him so quickly. It was so cold outside.
