The Chaplin’s office was having a family retreat… paid hotel room for two night at beautiful Edelweiss resort… a resort in Garmisch, Germany for Military members and their families.
Thought it would we a great family time so we signed up to go. We ended up coming on Sunday even though the retreat didn’t start until Monday, we got a great discount on the hotel for the extra day because we were attending the conference.
Sunday during the car ride down to Garmish Eli was very lethargic. I didn’t think too much of it because it was nap time. But when we got to the hotel he was burning up with a fever. We checked into the hotel and got him some Tylenol. After the medicine kicked in he seemed fine, back to his normal self. We went out for a very nice dinner at an Italian Restaurant in town. Then we went out for ice cream afterwards.
Monday the conference didn’t start until the evening so we decided to go out and explore beautiful Garmisch. As we were driving Caelyn started saying that she didn’t feel good. I figured that she was just getting car sick since we had been driving awhile and I hadn’t given her any medicine.
We decided to go to the Garmisch PX since we needed to pick up a few things anyway and it would give us sometime to get out of the car. Cae said that she needed to use the restroom. No sooner then we walked in the door and she got sick all over the bathroom floor. Still figuring it was from being car sick we gave some time for her motion sickness medicine to kick in then we headed up the mountain for a nice hike.
We hiked quite a way up the mountain. It was a very nice walking path… nothing too steep. Germany has a ton of great walking and biking paths. Cae was still saying that she wasn’t feeling well so we decided to head back to the hotel and go to the pool so we could stay out of the car for awhile.
By the time we got back to the hotel I wasn’t feeling that great. So we decided to stay in the room for a bit. Turns out it wasn’t car sickness. Caelyn and I took turns getting sick for the rest of the day. We spent the rest of the day in bed. Ryan was great running down to the store and vending machines for Sprite and medicine. He went and grabbed McDonalds for dinner but Cae and I weren’t feeling well enough to eat.
We ending up missing the Monday night session of the conference.
Tuesday morning Caelyn woke up feeling great and went to breakfast with Ryan. I still wasn’t feeling 100% so I decided to skip breakfast. But Ryan brought back muffins for me and Eli. We decided to try to go to the conference Tuesday morning so we didn’t miss it all. As the day was going on I was feeling better and better.
We got the kids to childcare… I wasn’t too excited about sending Caelyn after she had been sick but felt obligated since the conference was paying for our hotel room. She was feeling great and had kept down her breakfast and wasn’t showing any signs of being sick.
About half way thought the conference I looked over at Ryan and he wasn’t looking too good. I asked him if he was alright and he said “no”. He ended up going back to the room… he had caught whatever it was that we had.
After the conference I went back to the room to check on him and he was sick in bed. I didn’t want the kiddos running around the hotel room while he was trying to rest because I had been though it all the day before (I hadn’t been that sick in years!). So I left them in childcare most of the day and entertained myself by staring at the walls in the room.
When I went to pick them up Eli did not want to leave. He had a blast! The only time he has been in childcare here is while we are at AWANA and that is only for a couple of hours with a few other kiddos there. Caelyn had a great time at childcare as well. They took them to a lake to see the “mermaids” and had a demonstration with the military police dogs.
I took them to a playground and let them run around and play for quite a bit so that Ryan could rest. Eli had a blast. It was a much bigger playground then he usually gets to play on. After that we headed down for dinner… not so easy carrying two trays of food and holding a two year old’s hand… but Caelyn was a big help as usual.
Caelyn had been asking to go down to the pool since we got here. Eli hadn’t been swimming since we left the states. So I took them down to the pool. We ended up swimming for almost two hours. It was great.
The trip defiantly did not go as planned with everyone getting sick. But we still had a great time on the hike and swimming. Looking forward to coming back to Garmisch when we aren’t sick. There is so much to see and do down here. We are heading home in the morning and the rest of the week will probably be pretty hectic. Thankful for the time that we had together and for my great hubby who took care of me when I was sick!
